Benedetto Portinari's Triptych
Hans Memling·1487
Historical Context
Hans Memling's Benedetto Portinari Triptych, painted in 1487 and now in the Gemäldegalerie, Berlin, was commissioned by Benedetto Portinari, a member of the powerful Florentine banking family that managed the Medici bank in Bruges. The Portinari family were major patrons of Netherlandish art—Benedetto's relative Tommaso had commissioned Hugo van der Goes's famous Portinari Altarpiece. The triptych reflects the deep connections between Italian banking houses and Bruges' artistic workshops.
Technical Analysis
Memling's refined technique features the smooth, luminous flesh tones and precise costume rendering that appealed to his Italian patrons, with careful attention to the donor portrait and balanced triptych composition.
