Seven Saints in Adoration
Bartolo di Fredi·1385
Historical Context
Bartolo di Fredi was one of the leading Sienese painters of the late fourteenth century, known for his vibrant narrative cycles and devotional panels that maintained the lyrical elegance of the great Sienese Gothic tradition. This panel of Seven Saints in Adoration, dating to around 1385 and now in the Fralin Museum of Art, depicts a group of saints in collective veneration — likely adoring the Virgin and Child or the cross in a now-separated central panel. The multi-figure devotional format served to present an array of intercessory saints to the worshipper.
Technical Analysis
Egg tempera on gold-ground panel with Bartolo's characteristic vivid palette and graceful figural style. The seven saints are arranged in a rhythmic composition with varied poses and gestures that create visual interest, their tooled gold haloes forming a decorative pattern against the burnished background.
