Das Wunder von Amsterdam in drei Teilen
Historical Context
Jacob Cornelisz van Oostsanen depicted the Miracle of Amsterdam in three parts around 1511, commemorating the famous 1345 eucharistic miracle that made Amsterdam a pilgrimage destination. The miracle—in which a consecrated host survived being thrown into a fire—was central to Amsterdam's civic identity and religious culture throughout the late medieval period. The tempera medium required careful preparation on a gessoed panel and a disciplined layering technique that produced precise, durable surfaces suited to the intricate detail expected of devotional painting.
Technical Analysis
The triptych format allows Jacob Cornelisz to narrate the miracle sequence with his characteristic detailed storytelling, combining documentary precision with devotional reverence.
