Stifterporträts der Familie Korsgen Elbertzen - van der Schelling (rechter Teil)
Historical Context
Jacob Cornelisz van Oostsanen painted these donor portraits of the Korsgen Elbertzen-van der Schelling family around 1509. The right panel of a devotional diptych or triptych, it shows the female members of the family at prayer. Such donor portraits documented family piety and were displayed in churches or domestic chapels. The tempera medium required careful preparation on a gessoed panel and a disciplined layering technique that produced precise, durable surfaces suited to the intricate detail expected of devotional painting.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with Cornelisz's careful portrait rendering of the individual family members at prayer. The women's costumes and devotional postures are depicted with descriptive precision.
