Holy Family with Child St. John
Historical Context
Hans Burgkmair the Elder painted this Holy Family with the child Saint John around 1525. Burgkmair, one of Augsburg's leading painters, combined German artistic traditions with Italian Renaissance influences acquired during his Italian travels. The painting is in the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin. The 1520s were a decade of transition, marked by the deaths of Raphael and Leonardo, the shock of the Reformation, and the beginnings of Mannerist experimentation.
Technical Analysis
The devotional composition groups the Holy Family with the young Baptist in Burgkmair's characteristic style, blending German precision with Italian warmth and spatial depth.
