The Deposition
Historical Context
Cornelis Engebrechtsz., the leading painter of Leiden and teacher of Lucas van Leyden, created this Deposition around 1515. As head of Leiden's most important workshop, Engebrechtsz. developed a highly personal style characterized by elongated figures, rich color, and complex compositions that influenced an entire generation of Leiden painters. The tempera medium required careful preparation on a gessoed panel and a disciplined layering technique that produced precise, durable surfaces suited to the intricate detail expected of devotional painting.
Technical Analysis
The composition displays Engebrechtsz.'s characteristic mannered elegance with attenuated figures, intricate drapery patterns, and the warm gold-and-crimson palette of his workshop.
