The Entombment
Andrea Solari·1510
Historical Context
Andrea Solari, a Milanese painter who trained with his brother Cristoforo and came under Leonardo da Vinci's influence, created this Entombment around 1510. Solari's combination of Lombard craftsmanship with Leonardesque sfumato and Venetian color made him one of the most accomplished painters of the early Cinquecento Milanese school. The tempera medium required careful preparation on a gessoed panel and a disciplined layering technique that produced precise, durable surfaces suited to the intricate detail expected of devotional painting.
Technical Analysis
The Entombment demonstrates Solari's refined technique with smooth tonal transitions, emotional restraint, and the careful anatomical modeling he developed through study of Leonardo's methods.
