Mourning Virgin by Barnaba da Modena

Mourning Virgin

Barnaba da Modena·1370

Historical Context

This Mourning Virgin by Barnaba da Modena, one of the most important Ligurian painters of the Trecento, displays the intense emotional piety characteristic of late Gothic devotional art. Active primarily in Genoa and Pisa from the 1360s onward, Barnaba blended Byzantine iconic traditions with Western Gothic expressiveness to create images of powerful spiritual immediacy. The isolated figure of the grieving Virgin was typically paired with a corresponding image of Saint John in a Crucifixion ensemble.

Technical Analysis

Painted in egg tempera on gold-ground panel, the figure of the mourning Virgin is rendered with the Byzantine-influenced solemnity that defined Barnaba's style. Rich ultramarine drapery is modeled with subtle tonal transitions, while the gold ground and incised halo evoke transcendent sacred space.
