The Crucifixion
Biagio d'Antonio·1480
Historical Context
Biagio d'Antonio, a Florentine painter active from the 1470s to around 1510, painted this Crucifixion around 1480. Though not among Florence's most celebrated masters, Biagio maintained a productive workshop supplying altarpieces, cassone panels, and devotional images. He participated in the decoration of the Sistine Chapel in 1481-1482 alongside more famous colleagues. This work belongs to the Early Renaissance, the transformative period in European art when painters first applied mathematical perspective, naturalistic figure modeling, and archaeological interest in antiquity to the inherited traditions of medieval devotional painting.
Technical Analysis
Tempera on panel with competent Florentine figure drawing and conventional Crucifixion iconography. The mourning figures flanking the cross follow established compositional patterns used in Florentine workshops.
