Virgin and Child Enthroned with Saints John the Baptist, Nicholas, Dorothy and Reparata; with Crucifixion
Cenni di Francesco·1380
Historical Context
This elaborate altarpiece by Cenni di Francesco depicts the Virgin and Child enthroned with an assembly of saints and a Crucifixion scene, reflecting the rich devotional culture of late Trecento Florence. Cenni, active from the 1370s through around 1415, was a prolific painter who worked extensively for Florentine churches and confraternities. The inclusion of Saints Dorothy and Reparata alongside John the Baptist and Nicholas suggests a Florentine commission, as Reparata was the original patron saint of Florence's cathedral.
Technical Analysis
Painted in egg tempera and gold leaf on panel, the multi-register composition combines an enthroned Madonna with a Crucifixion in the gable above. Cenni's precise draftsmanship and jewel-like color harmonies are set against elaborate tooled gold grounds with intricate punchwork borders.
