Yvonne Printemps et Sacha Guitry
Édouard Vuillard·1917
Historical Context
Yvonne Printemps and Sacha Guitry were among the most celebrated theatrical couples of interwar Paris. Guitry was a playwright, director, and actor of enormous popular success; Printemps was a soprano and actress known for her roles in his productions. Vuillard painted them in their home, continuing his practice of depicting the leading cultural figures of his social world in their own domestic environments rather than in formal studio settings. The theatrical world and the world of the grande bourgeoisie overlapped in the Paris Vuillard inhabited, and this double portrait records a moment in a specific social history.
Technical Analysis
Vuillard sets the two figures within a richly furnished interior, the patterned surfaces of upholstery, curtains, and walls providing his characteristic ground against which the faces are the most focused passages. The composition is relaxed and informal, suggesting an observed moment rather than a staged pose.
