Die Madonna mit Kind erscheint dem hl. Ubaldo, Bischof von Gubbio und verweist auf den Ort zur Gründung der Stadt Pesaro
Palma il Giovane·1620
Historical Context
Palma il Giovane painted this complex votive altarpiece for a Pesaro church, depicting the Virgin and Child appearing to the local bishop Saint Ubaldo as he identifies the site for founding the city. Such civic foundation myths were popular subjects for Italian Baroque altarpieces, uniting local patriotism with religious devotion. The large-scale work belongs to Palma's mature production when he was the dominant figure in Venetian religious painting.
Technical Analysis
The composition is arranged on two levels: the heavenly zone with the Virgin and Child occupying the upper half, the bishop and attendants below. Palma il Giovane handles the spatial transition between celestial and terrestrial with characteristic ease. The palette is warm and the drapery broadly painted, relying on confident brushwork rather than minute finish.
