Sleeping Venus by Giorgione

Sleeping Venus

Giorgione·1509

Historical Context

Giorgione's Sleeping Venus, painted around 1509-1510 and now in the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden, is one of the most influential paintings in Western art. The reclining nude goddess asleep in a pastoral landscape established the format that Titian (who reportedly completed the landscape after Giorgione's death), Velázquez, Goya, and Manet would all develop. The painting transforms the nude from a medieval symbol of sin into a celebration of ideal beauty in harmony with nature.

Technical Analysis

Giorgione achieves revolutionary unity between the nude figure and landscape through seamlessly blended tones and soft atmospheric modeling, with the gentle curves of the body echoing the rolling hills in a harmonious integration of figure and nature.
