Lamentation of Christ
Historical Context
The Master of the Housebook, one of the most original printmakers and painters of the late fifteenth-century Rhineland, created this Lamentation around 1495. Named after a household manual in a private collection, this anonymous master is known for his vivid, naturalistic approach that anticipates the realism of the sixteenth century. His paintings, fewer than his prints, show remarkable emotional depth.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with the Master's distinctive naturalism and emotional directness. The mourning figures display genuine grief rendered without the stylization typical of contemporary devotional painting.
