Virgin and Child enthroned between St Ursula and St Catherine
Davide Ghirlandaio·1480
Historical Context
Davide Ghirlandaio, younger brother and close collaborator of Domenico, painted this Virgin and Child enthroned between Saints Ursula and Catherine around 1480. Davide worked extensively in the Ghirlandaio family workshop, executing commissions independently as well as assisting his brother on major projects. His style closely follows Domenico's but with a slightly more mechanical quality. This work belongs to the Early Renaissance, the transformative period in European art when painters first applied mathematical perspective, naturalistic figure modeling, and archaeological interest in antiquity to the inherited traditions of medieval devotional painting.
Technical Analysis
Tempera on panel with the clear draftsmanship and bright coloring associated with the Ghirlandaio workshop. The enthroned Virgin flanked by saints follows standard Florentine sacra conversazione composition.
