The Holy Trinity
Antonio de Pereda·1659
Historical Context
Antonio de Pereda was a Madrid-based painter closely associated with the circle of Francisco de Zurbarán and the tradition of Spanish devotional art. This 1659 Holy Trinity depicts the three persons of the Christian God in the iconographic format that combined the Father (as an elderly man), the Son (crucified or as the adult Christ), and the Holy Spirit (as a dove). Pereda's religious works belong to the austere, concentrated devotional tradition of Counter-Reformation Spain.
Technical Analysis
The three divine persons are arranged vertically, with the dove descending toward the crucified Christ supported by the Father above. Pereda uses a darkened background against which warm flesh tones and golden light isolate the celestial figures with concentrated intensity.
