Portrait of King Louis II of Hungary (posthumous)
Bernard van Orley·1514
Historical Context
Bernard van Orley painted this posthumous portrait of King Louis II of Hungary around 1514, depicting the young ruler who would later die at the Battle of Mohács in 1526. As court painter to the Habsburg regent Margaret of Austria, van Orley had access to diplomatic portraits and dynastic imagery circulating among the allied royal houses of Europe. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique.
Technical Analysis
The portrait demonstrates van Orley's ability to create convincing likenesses for diplomatic purposes, combining Netherlandish precision of detail with the dignified presentation required for royal portraiture.
