Saint Erasmus
Historical Context
Jacob Cornelisz van Oostsanen painted this Saint Erasmus around 1506 in Amsterdam. Erasmus of Formiae, not to be confused with Erasmus of Rotterdam, was one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers and was invoked against abdominal ailments. His cult was widespread in the Netherlands and Germany. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique. Such devotional panels served both liturgical contexts in churches and chapels and private devotional use in the homes of wealthy families who maintained personal altars and oratories.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with Cornelisz's vivid Amsterdam coloring and detailed rendering of the saint's episcopal vestments and instruments of martyrdom. The figure is presented with devotional gravity.
