São Cosme, São Tomé e São Damião
Francisco Henriques·1505
Historical Context
Francisco Henriques painted Saints Cosmas, Thomas, and Damian around 1505 in Portugal. The medical saints Cosmas and Damian were widely venerated as patrons of physicians and surgeons. Henriques's Netherlandish training brought refined oil painting technique to Portuguese religious art. This work falls in the decades immediately around 1500, when Renaissance ideals of harmony and classical order were being synthesised across Europe.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with Henriques's Flemish-trained technique and precise rendering of the saints' attributes. The composition reflects the quality standards that Netherlandish painters brought to Portuguese workshops.
