The Water-Mill
Meindert Hobbema·1660
Historical Context
This Water-Mill at the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium represents Hobbema's early treatment of the subject that became his signature. The Brussels museum's collection of Dutch and Flemish painting, one of the most comprehensive in Europe given Belgium's geographical position between the Dutch and Flemish artistic traditions, preserves this early work in a context that allows comparison with both Dutch predecessors and Flemish contemporaries. His early water-mill compositions show him developing the compositional formula — mill on the left or right of center, millpond reflections below, trees framing the scene above — that he would refine throughout his most productive decade.
Technical Analysis
The mill and its aquatic setting are rendered with careful attention to the physics of flowing water and the textures of timber construction, set within a woodland that demonstrates Hobbema's developing mastery of tree forms.
