Holy Family with Saint Elizabeth and the infant St. John
Raphael·1517
Historical Context
The Holy Family with Saint Elizabeth and the infant Saint John (c. 1517–18) in the Louvre, known as the Grande Sainte Famille, was painted during Raphael's final Roman years and entered the French royal collection through Cardinal Giulio de' Medici's gift to King Francis I. The large-scale composition of the extended Holy Family reflects the workshop production that Raphael organized to meet the demand for devotional paintings from royal and aristocratic patrons across Europe. The harmony of the group arrangement and the quality of the individual figures demonstrate the studio's exceptional competence, even where Raphael's own hand is not consistently primary throughout. The work had significant influence on French devotional painting through its presence in the royal collection.
Technical Analysis
The monumental figures and rich, warm palette demonstrate Raphael's late style at its most accomplished, with a masterful pyramidal composition and smooth, sculptural modeling.
