Lamentation of Christ
Andrea Mantegna·1483
Historical Context
Andrea Mantegna's Lamentation of Christ (Dead Christ), painted around 1483 and now in the Pinacoteca di Brera, Milan, is one of the most famous and innovative paintings of the Italian Renaissance. The extreme foreshortening of Christ's body, viewed from the feet, creates an unprecedented sense of physical immediacy that draws the viewer into direct confrontation with death. The painting was found in Mantegna's studio after his death in 1506, suggesting it may have been a personal devotional work.
Technical Analysis
Mantegna's radical foreshortening demonstrates his mastery of perspective applied to the human figure, with the tempera technique rendering stone-like flesh tones and precisely observed anatomical details that heighten the painting's visceral emotional impact.
