The Annunciation
Bernard van Orley·1518
Historical Context
Bernard van Orley, court painter to Margaret of Austria in Brussels, created this Annunciation around 1518. Van Orley was the dominant artistic personality in Brussels during the 1510s-1530s, producing tapestry designs, portraits, and altarpieces that introduced Italian Renaissance monumentality into the Netherlandish tradition, partly through his study of Raphael's cartoons. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique.
Technical Analysis
The panel shows van Orley's synthesis of Netherlandish precision with Italianate spatial grandeur, featuring the architectural settings and monumental figures that characterize his Brussels court style.
