Eilif Peterssen was one of the leading Norwegian painters of his generation, known for both portraits and Orientalist subjects acquired during his travels. This 1874 portrait of a Hungarian baron may reflect his Munich training years, when encounters with Central European aristocracy were possible, or a specific commission. The title places the sitter within a cultural type — the Hungarian nobleman — rather than individualizing him by name, suggesting a character study as much as a formal portrait. Peterssen's portraits from this period show the influence of the intense, dark-toned portrait style prevalent in Munich, where psychological penetration mattered more than social flattery.
