Portrait of Christian IV. Copy after Karl v. Mander

This 1875 copy by Adolph Tidemand after Karl van Mander's portrait of Christian IV — the Danish-Norwegian king who ruled from 1588 to 1648 and was one of the most significant monarchs in Scandinavian history — served the Norwegian national project of documenting the country's royal and historical heritage. Tidemand was Norway's most important painter of national subject matter in the mid-19th century, famous for his images of Norwegian peasant life and religious practice. A copy of Christian IV's portrait by a major national painter served both artistic-historical and cultural-political purposes, contributing to the construction of a shared Scandinavian historical consciousness.
