From Kviteseid in Telemark
Thorvald Erichsen·1900
Historical Context
Thorvald Erichsen's view from Kviteseid in Telemark painted around 1900 records one of the most characteristic landscapes of the Telemark region — a valley area in southwestern Norway whose cultural identity, folk traditions, and natural scenery made it a significant destination for artists interested in Norwegian national life. Telemark was the region most associated with the preservation of Old Norse cultural heritage in folk music, costume, and architecture, and Erichsen's painting participates in the tradition of landscape as national cultural documentation. The National Museum preserves it alongside his other Norwegian landscapes.
Technical Analysis
The Telemark landscape presents Erichsen with the characteristic combination of cultivated valley floor, wooded slopes, and the particular quality of Norwegian light filtered through a partly cloudy northern sky. His Post-Impressionist handling gives the familiar subject chromatic freshness.
