Kronborg Castle in Moonlight

This 1849 moonlit view of Kronborg Castle in Helsingør, Denmark, combines Dahl's fascination with nocturnal effects with Scandinavian architectural and cultural heritage. Kronborg, the castle famous as the setting of Shakespeare's Hamlet, was among the most symbolically loaded buildings in Scandinavia — a Renaissance fortress guarding the narrow strait between Denmark and Sweden that carried associations of northern history, mythology, and literary tradition. Dahl's moonlit treatment invests the castle with the atmospheric mystery appropriate to its Shakespearean associations while maintaining his characteristic interest in the specific optical phenomena of moonlight on water and stone.
