Cloud Study over Red Roofs
Johan Christian Dahl·1831
Historical Context
This 1831 cloud study reflects Dahl's systematic investigation of atmospheric phenomena undertaken alongside his friend Caspar David Friedrich in Dresden. Like John Constable in England, Dahl pursued cloud observation as both artistic exercise and quasi-scientific inquiry — his cloud studies were connected to the meteorological culture stimulated by Luke Howard's 1803 cloud classification system. The red roofs below the cloud formation provide a specifically European architectural context that grounds the atmospheric subject in a particular geographical setting. By 1831, Dahl had been producing such studies for over a decade and his command of cloud structure and light behavior was fully developed.
Technical Analysis
Painted rapidly from direct observation, this study captures the transient forms of clouds over rooftops with free, confident brushwork and a keen sensitivity to the color temperature of atmospheric light.
