Study of Storm Clouds
Johan Christian Dahl·1840
Historical Context
This 1840 storm cloud study belongs to Dahl's extensive series of atmospheric investigations pursued throughout four decades of Dresden residence. By 1840 he was fifty-two, his observational practice deeply established, and these late storm cloud studies show the maturity of a painter who had been systematically documenting weather formations since the early 1820s. Storm clouds represented the extreme case in his atmospheric program — the formations most dramatic in their visual character, most rapid in their development, and most resonant with the sublime qualities that Romantic landscape painting associated with overwhelming natural power. His empirical approach to these dramatic formations maintained scientific detachment alongside evident aesthetic engagement.
Technical Analysis
The turbulent cloud formations are captured with energetic, dynamic brushwork, using dark tonal masses contrasted against lighter passages to convey the threatening power of the approaching storm.
