Apparition of the Virgin to Saint Lawrence
El Greco·1577
Historical Context
Apparition of the Virgin to Saint Lawrence (1577–79) at the College of Our Lady of Antigua is an early Toledo commission depicting the third-century deacon-martyr receiving a celestial vision. Lawrence, who famously quipped that he was 'done on this side' while being roasted on a gridiron, was one of the most popular martyr saints, his combination of steadfast faith and darkly humorous courage making him appealing across classes and generations. El Greco's treatment shows the still relatively naturalistic figure style of his early Spanish period, before the full dematerialization of his mature works. The subject combines the two registers — heavenly apparition above, earthly martyr below — that El Greco would develop into one of his most characteristic compositional structures.
Technical Analysis
The dramatic contrast between the earthly saint and the celestial vision creates El Greco's characteristic two-zone composition, with luminous, ethereal figures above and more solidly modeled forms below.
