Forest by Ivan Shishkin

Forest

Ivan Shishkin·1900

Historical Context

Among the most broadly titled of his works, this canvas held at the Kovalenko Krasnodar Regional Art Museum was a type Shishkin produced throughout his career: a straight-on, resolved statement of what Russian forest looks and feels like, without additional narrative or atmospheric complication. By 1900 Shishkin was the accepted master of this subject, and a painting simply called 'Forest' by him carried the authority of a lifetime's systematic observation. Regional museums in southern Russia collected his work extensively during his lifetime and after, recognising him as the definitive interpreter of the Russian landscape.

Technical Analysis

Shishkin's characteristic method of layering dark under-painting with successively lighter glazes of green and ochre creates a sense of genuine tonal depth in the canopy. Individual trees are identifiable by species from their bark and branch structure, demonstrating the botanical specificity that critics and collectors consistently admired.
