Madonna and Child with Saints John the Baptist and Catherine of Alexandria
Andrea Previtali·1505
Historical Context
Andrea Previtali painted this Madonna and Child with Saints John the Baptist and Catherine around 1505 for the church of San Giobbe in Venice. Previtali's gentle Bellinesque style made his altarpieces appropriate for Venetian churches. The combination of the Baptist and Catherine was a common altarpiece dedication. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique. Such devotional panels served both liturgical contexts in churches and chapels and private devotional use in the homes of wealthy families who maintained personal altars and oratories.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with warm Venetian coloring and the atmospheric depth characteristic of Previtali's Bellini-trained style. The sacra conversazione arrangement follows established Venetian conventions.
