Christ and the Magdalene
Historical Context
Jacob Cornelisz van Oostsanen painted this Christ and the Magdalene around 1507 in Amsterdam. The encounter between the risen Christ and Mary Magdalene (Noli me tangere) was a tender scene that balanced resurrection theology with human emotion. Cornelisz was Amsterdam's leading painter before the Reformation transformed the city's artistic landscape. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with Cornelisz's characteristic Amsterdam school technique and vivid coloring. The garden setting and the two figures' interaction are rendered with the narrative clarity of the Dutch painting tradition.
