Tobit heals his father's eyes
Annibale Carracci·1600
Historical Context
Tobit Heals His Father's Eyes (c. 1598-1600), in the Hessen Kassel Heritage collection, depicts the Old Testament scene in which the young Tobias, guided by the archangel Raphael, restores his blind father Tobit's sight using the gall of a miraculous fish. The subject was popular in Counter-Reformation art for its themes of filial piety, divine providence, and miraculous healing. Annibale treats the intimate family scene with characteristic warmth and naturalism, presenting the miraculous healing as a tender domestic event rather than a spectacular supernatural intervention. The Kassel collection, assembled by the Landgraves of Hessen, includes significant Italian paintings acquired during the Baroque era.
Technical Analysis
The domestic interior setting is rendered with naturalistic attention to furnishings and light. The healing gesture — Tobit applying the fish gall to his father's eyes — is depicted with the physical specificity that distinguishes Carracci narrative painting from more idealized treatments of the same subject.
