Portrait of a Venetian Senator (Bernardo Morosini?)
Jacopo Bassano·1495
Historical Context
Jacopo Bassano, from the Venetian mainland town of Bassano del Grappa, is one of the most distinctive painters of the Venetian Renaissance. This portrait traditionally identified as Senator Bernardo Morosini reflects his early work, before the dramatic nocturnal scenes and pastoral subjects that define his mature style. Bassano's family workshop would become one of the most productive in the Veneto.
Technical Analysis
Oil on canvas with rich Venetian coloring and dignified portrait treatment. The sitter's senatorial robes are rendered with the warm palette and solid modeling characteristic of Venetian portrait painting.
