Terranuova Madonna by Raphael

Terranuova Madonna

Raphael·1505

Historical Context

The Terranuova Madonna (c. 1505) in the Gemäldegalerie, Berlin, is a tondo depicting the Madonna and Child with the infant Saints John and another young saint, painted during Raphael's Florentine period. The circular format — the tondo — had been popularized in Florence as a format for domestic devotional paintings and challenged painters to adapt their compositions to the enclosed circular field. Raphael's solution is elegant: the figures curve gently to echo the tondo's form while maintaining their natural presence. The landscape background, with its carefully painted trees and atmospheric recession, reflects the influence of Flemish landscape conventions filtering into Florentine painting through the Netherlands connection.

Technical Analysis

Raphael adapts his figures beautifully to the circular format, with gentle curves echoing the tondo shape. The cool blue background and luminous flesh tones create a sense of crystalline Florentine clarity.
