Christus vertreibt die Händler aus dem Tempel (1590er Jahre)
Palma Vecchio·1590
Historical Context
Christ Driving the Money Changers from the Temple, attributed to Palma but dating to the 1590s, represents the violent purification of the Temple that was a popular subject in Counter-Reformation art. The later date suggests attribution to Palma Giovane or another follower rather than to Palma Vecchio himself. Characteristic of the artist's mature approach, the work displays rich, warm Venetian color inherited from Giorgione and the young Titian, voluptuous female figures with characteristic golden hair, atmospheric landscapes that merge seamlessly with figure groups.
Technical Analysis
The dramatic scene employs energetic figure movement and strong contrasts of light and shadow more characteristic of late Mannerist or early Baroque painting than Palma Vecchio's serene Renaissance style.
