Madonna con Bambino in trono e Santi
Taddeo di Bartolo·1390
Historical Context
This enthroned Madonna and Child with Saints by Taddeo di Bartolo, dating to around 1390, represents a sacra conversazione composition in which the Virgin and saints are unified in a single devotional scene. Now in the Museum of Grenoble, the painting reflects the widespread demand for Taddeo's altarpieces across central Italy during the last decade of the Trecento. The subject expressed the heavenly communion of saints around the Virgin, a theological concept central to late medieval piety.
Technical Analysis
Executed in tempera and gold on panel, the work features Taddeo's characteristic warm palette and strongly modeled figures arranged symmetrically around the central Madonna. The richly gilded background and ornate throne architecture typify the decorative splendor of late Sienese Gothic altarpieces.
