Christus am Ölberg
Historical Context
Rueland Frueauf the Elder painted this Agony in the Garden around 1490 for an Austrian Passion cycle. The nocturnal scene in Gethsemane, where Christ agonized in prayer while his disciples slept, was the opening act of the Passion drama. Frueauf's Austrian treatment brings emotional warmth to this contemplative scene. This work belongs to the High Renaissance, when the innovations of the preceding century were synthesized into works of monumental clarity and ideal beauty. The period's defining aesthetic — balanced composition, idealized figures, unified atmospheric space — was developed above all in Florence and Rome before spreading across Italy and Europe.
