Tempelgang Mariens
Marx Reichlich·1502
Historical Context
Marx Reichlich painted this Presentation of the Virgin in the Temple around 1502 in the Tyrol. Reichlich was the leading painter of the South Tyrol, producing altarpieces for churches across the region. The Marian subject was standard fare for Tyrolean altarpieces. The tempera medium required careful preparation on a gessoed panel and a disciplined layering technique that produced precise, durable surfaces suited to the intricate detail expected of devotional painting. Such devotional panels served both liturgical contexts in churches and chapels and private devotional use in the homes of wealthy families who maintained personal altars and oratories.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with Reichlich's Tyrolean palette and careful architectural rendering of the temple setting. The young Virgin's ascent of the stairs is staged within an elaborate perspective framework.
