The Argo
Lorenzo Costa·1490
Historical Context
The Argo at the Civic Museums of Padua depicts the legendary ship of the Greek hero Jason and the Argonauts, the mythological voyage to retrieve the Golden Fleece that was one of the most elaborately narrated stories of classical antiquity. Costa painted it around 1490, probably for an Estense court context given the Este family's enthusiasm for mythological subjects in this period. The choice of the Argo — a ship filled with heroes — allowed Costa to paint a complex multi-figure composition in a maritime setting, demonstrating his ability to handle the ambitious humanist subjects increasingly demanded by his patrons alongside his better-known devotional work.
Technical Analysis
A ship crowded with figures required Costa to manage spatial compression without losing the identity of individual Argonauts. He uses overlapping forms and varying figure scales to suggest depth within the tight deck space, while the ship's structure provides a strong frame for the composition.
