Beethoven Frieze (plate 4, left wall): Yearning for Happiness by Gustav Klimt

Beethoven Frieze (plate 4, left wall): Yearning for Happiness

Gustav Klimt·1901

Historical Context

The fourth plate of the Beethoven Frieze's left wall continues the 'Yearning for Happiness' section, with figures in attitudes of longing and aspiration that build the emotional narrative before the interruption of the hostile powers. Klimt conceived the left wall as a sustained meditation on human desire — the reaching toward an ideal that remains perpetually out of grasp — and each successive plate deepens this emotional register. The frieze was meant to be experienced as a complete visual environment in the 1902 Secession exhibition, where it occupied three walls of a purpose-designed gallery.

Technical Analysis

The fourth plate maintains the atmospheric visual language of the left wall — floating figures with naturalistically rendered faces against ornamental grounds of gold and pattern. The compositional rhythm of the figures creates a sense of flowing, yearning movement that advances the emotional narrative.
