Die Feuerprobe
Pedro Berruguete·1485
Historical Context
Pedro Berruguete painted this Fire Ordeal scene around 1485 for the monastery of Santo Tomás in Ávila, as part of a cycle depicting the life of Saint Dominic. The scene shows a miraculous trial by fire testing the orthodoxy of Catholic writings. Berruguete's commission for this Dominican monastery was among his most important, and the cycle reflects the order's role in defending the faith. This work belongs to the Early Renaissance, the transformative period in European art when painters first applied mathematical perspective, naturalistic figure modeling, and archaeological interest in antiquity to the inherited traditions of medieval devotional painting.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with dramatic narrative composition combining Italian perspective with Spanish devotional fervor. The architectural setting reveals Berruguete's mastery of spatial construction learned at the court of Urbino.
