Louis de Bourbon-Condé, Count of Clermont (1709-1771) by François Hubert Drouais

Louis de Bourbon-Condé, Count of Clermont (1709-1771)

François Hubert Drouais·1771

Historical Context

Louis de Bourbon-Conde, Count of Clermont, a prince of the blood and military commander, appears in this 1771 portrait at the Museum of the History of France at Versailles. The Count of Clermont led an eventful life as soldier, courtier, and patron of the arts, and his portrait by Drouais records a man at the intersection of military glory and aristocratic refinement. The Museum at Versailles preserves the official portraits that documented the French court.

Technical Analysis

The princely portrait combines military dignity with courtly elegance, Drouais presenting the sitter in the formal attire and decorations appropriate to his rank. The handling of the sitter"s features shows Drouais"s ability to balance idealization with recognizable likeness. Military decorations and sashes provide color accents within the otherwise restrained palette of male court portraiture.
