Pierantonio Bandini by Bronzino

Pierantonio Bandini

Bronzino·1552

Historical Context

Pierantonio Bandini was a member of the Florentine banking family with close Medici ties, making him exactly the sort of elite subject Bronzino portrayed throughout his career. Portraits of Florentine merchants, bankers, and administrators formed the commercial backbone of Bronzino's practice alongside his Medici commissions, and the Bandini portrait shows him applying the same controlled, psychologically austere style to a subject outside the ruling family. The neutral background, direct gaze, and precisely rendered costume establish the sitter's social position with the economy characteristic of Bronzino's mature portraiture.

Technical Analysis

Bronzino uses the neutral dark background as a foil for the face and the precisely described black costume, reserving his most careful attention for the slight animation of the eyes — the only place in the composition where the sitter's inner life breaks through the surface of aristocratic composure.
