Salomón
Master of Becerril·1525
Historical Context
The Master of Becerril depicted King Solomon around 1525, likely as part of his series of Old Testament figures. Solomon, the wise king of Israel who built the Temple in Jerusalem, was one of the most important figures in both Jewish and Christian tradition. The painting is in the Museo del Prado. The tempera-on-panel medium required a carefully gessoed surface and was painted in fine, precise layers, yielding a luminous, jewel-like surface of great durability.
Technical Analysis
The royal figure is presented with the formal dignity and attributes appropriate to the wise king. The style is consistent with the other prophets and kings in this Castilian master's series.
