Le Yacht pavoisé au Havre

Painted in 1904 and held at the MuMa Museum in Le Havre, this early canvas depicting a festively decorated yacht in the port of Le Havre predates Dufy's mature Fauvist and post-Fauvist style but shows his early mastery of the harbor subject that would define much of his career. In 1904 he was still working under the influence of Impressionism, particularly Boudin's Norman harbor scenes, but the festive subject—a yacht flying decorative flags—already suggests the celebration of leisure and public spectacle that would animate his mature work.

At this early date, Dufy's paint handling is more conventionally Impressionist than his later work, with broken brushwork and a closer adherence to observed local color. The decorated yacht provides vertical movement against the horizontal harbor surface, and the flags' colors—reds, whites, blues—introduce the festive chromatic emphasis that would define his mature harbor paintings.
