John the Evangelist
El Greco·1577
Historical Context
El Greco's John the Evangelist of 1577, painted shortly after his arrival in Toledo, depicts the author of the fourth Gospel and the Book of Revelation — the visionary apostle — in one of the altarpiece series he executed for Santo Domingo el Antiguo. The eagle, his traditional symbol, appears at his feet. El Greco's treatment draws on his Byzantine and Venetian formation while already developing the personal style that would define his Toledo period: the elongated figure, the flickering light on garments, and the intense, slightly otherworldly gaze.
Technical Analysis
El Greco renders the youthful evangelist with idealized features and upward-turning gaze, using his developing Spanish palette of cooler tones to suggest spiritual vision and prophetic inspiration.
