St John the Evangelist
El Greco·1609
Historical Context
Saint John the Evangelist (c. 1605-10), in the Museo del Prado, is a late depiction of the beloved disciple traditionally identified as the author of the Fourth Gospel and the Book of Revelation. El Greco renders John with the elongated proportions and visionary luminosity of his final period, the youthful apostle presented as a conduit for divine revelation. John's traditional identification as the visionary of Patmos made him a particularly sympathetic figure for El Greco, whose own art aspired to render the invisible visible through painting.
Technical Analysis
The painting exemplifies El Greco's late style with its elongated figure, flickering brushwork, and ecstatic upward gaze. The cool palette of blues and greens creates a mystical atmosphere, while the dynamic drapery folds generate a sense of spiritual energy.
