Metsys painted this Lamentation as a companion to the Joiners' Guild altarpiece, the two panels forming a comprehensive program of Christ's Passion. The Lamentation — the mourning of Christ's body after the Deposition — was the emotional center of Passion devotion, demanding the painter's fullest resources of facial expression and body language in the service of devout sympathy.
